Plain-English glossary
The terms that show up on quotes and rebate forms, without the jargon.
- SEER2 / HSPF2
- Efficiency ratings for cooling and heating. Higher is cheaper to run, and usually what a rebate is keyed to.
- AFUE
- How much of the fuel a furnace or boiler turns into heat. A 96% AFUE furnace wastes four cents of every dollar.
- Ton
- A unit of cooling capacity, not weight. Most Central CT houses land between two and five tons.
- Static pressure
- How hard your blower has to push against the duct. High static is why a new system can still feel weak.
- Load calculation
- The room-by-room math that decides equipment size. Skipping it is how houses end up with oversized systems that short-cycle.
- Zoning
- Splitting a house into separately controlled areas, the usual fix for a hot second floor.
