Connecticut summers are short, humid and unforgiving
Air conditioning here does not run all year, and that is exactly why it fails the way it does. Systems sit idle for eight months, then get asked to work flat out during the first genuinely hot week, which is also the week every HVAC company in Central Connecticut is fully booked.
The most common faults we find are a failed run capacitor, a condenser fan motor that has seized, a refrigerant leak that has been developing quietly for a season, a contactor with burnt points, or a blocked condensate drain shutting the system down on a safety switch.
What separates a real diagnosis from a guess is measurement. Superheat and subcooling, static pressure, amperage draw on the compressor and fan, and temperature split across the coil. Topping up refrigerant without finding the leak is the single most common bad practice in this trade, and it means you pay for the same gas again next summer.
We repair every major brand, including systems we did not install, and the parts that fail most often ride on the van.

Symptoms and what they usually mean
Most of these get worse and more expensive the longer the system runs with them.
Running but blowing warm
Usually low refrigerant from a leak, a failed compressor, or a condenser fan that has stopped. Switch it off rather than letting it run.
Ice on the lines or the coil
Airflow restriction or low refrigerant. Turn the system off and let it thaw, running it iced up can destroy the compressor.
Water around the air handler
A blocked condensate drain. The safety switch will shut the system down, and left long enough it damages ceilings below.
Trips the breaker
A compressor or fan motor drawing too much current. Never keep resetting it; that is how a repair becomes a replacement.
Cool but clammy
The system is cooling without dehumidifying, which usually means it is oversized or the airflow is set too high.
Loud outdoor unit
Grinding is a bearing, screeching is often the compressor, and a hard buzzing click on startup is very often just a failing capacitor.
What happens on an AC call
Full measurement, then a price, then the repair. In that order.
Book AC repairCheck the easy things first
Thermostat, breaker, filter and condensate safety switch. A meaningful number of calls end here, and we will tell you if that is what happened.
Measure the refrigerant circuit
Superheat, subcooling and pressures against the manufacturer chart. This is what tells us whether there is a leak and roughly where.
Test electrical and airflow
Capacitors, contactor, compressor and fan amperage, static pressure and temperature split across the coil.
Quote, repair, verify
A written price for your approval, then the fix, then a full cooling cycle with the final readings left with you.

What AC repair costs
A flat diagnostic fee covers the visit and the full measurement sequence, the same price in every town we serve. If you proceed, you know the total before we begin.
Capacitors, contactors and condensate faults are at the affordable end and are almost always one-visit repairs. Fan motors and control boards sit in the middle. Refrigerant leak repair and compressor replacement are the expensive end, because the parts and the labour both scale.
For an R-22 system over twelve years old facing a compressor or major leak repair, we will price a replacement alongside so you can see both numbers honestly. R-22 refrigerant is phased out and priced accordingly.
What moves the price
- Which component failedCapacitor and compressor are the two ends of a very wide range.
- Refrigerant typeR-22 systems cost significantly more to recharge than modern R-410A equipment.
- Leak locationA leak at an accessible fitting is a different job from one inside the evaporator coil.
- After-hours timingEmergency calls outside normal hours carry a premium, quoted before we dispatch.
AC repair questions
Why is my AC blowing warm air?
Most often low refrigerant from a leak, a condenser fan that has stopped turning, or a failed compressor. Turn the system off rather than letting it run, an AC running without adequate refrigerant can destroy its own compressor.
My AC is frozen solid. What should I do?
Switch it off at the thermostat, leave the fan running to thaw the coil, and check the filter. Ice means either restricted airflow or low refrigerant, and both need diagnosing. Running an iced system is the fastest way to turn a repair into a replacement.
Do I just need more refrigerant?
Air conditioners do not consume refrigerant. If yours is low, it has a leak. Anyone who tops you up without finding it is selling you the same gas again next year.
How long should an AC last in Connecticut?
Twelve to eighteen years is typical, and our shorter cooling season helps. Annual maintenance and correct sizing are the two biggest factors in where you land.
Is it worth repairing an R-22 system?
Small repairs, sometimes. Anything requiring significant refrigerant, usually not. R-22 is phased out and the price reflects that. We will show you the comparison rather than deciding for you.
Can you repair a system you did not install?
Yes. Most of what we repair was installed by somebody else, and we service every major residential brand.
