Oversized air conditioning is the most common mistake in this trade

An air conditioner does two jobs: it lowers the temperature and it removes moisture. The second one only happens when the system runs for a decent stretch. An oversized unit hits the thermostat setpoint quickly, shuts off, and leaves the house cold and clammy, which is why so many people describe a brand new system as feeling worse than the old one.

It also short-cycles, which is hard on the compressor, noisy, and wasteful. And it is extremely common, because sizing by square footage or by matching the old nameplate is quicker than doing the calculation.

We do the calculation. Orientation, window area and type, insulation levels, ceiling heights, and how the house is actually used. In Central Connecticut the result is very often smaller than what is currently installed.

The other half of the job is airflow. We came out of sheet metal fabrication, and we measure static pressure before we quote. A new condenser bolted to an undersized return will never deliver what the label promises.

Getting the specification right

What we work through before quoting anything.

  • Correct capacity

Sized to the calculated load. Long, steady cycles dehumidify properly and cost less to run than short bursts.

  • Ductwork capacity

If the return cannot feed the blower, efficiency is lost before the air ever reaches a room. We measure and correct.

  • Efficiency level

Higher SEER2 costs more up front and less to run. We show the actual annual difference for a Connecticut season, not a generic figure.

  • Cooling only, or both

If your heating is also ageing, a heat pump replaces both systems for less than replacing them separately.

  • Noise and placement

Outdoor unit position matters, away from bedroom windows, with proper clearance, on a level pad that will not settle.

  • Humidity control

Variable-speed equipment handles Connecticut humidity far better than single-stage. Often the biggest comfort upgrade available.

How an installation runs

Survey, quote, install, commission, with the numbers checked at both ends.

Get a written quote
  1. Survey and load calculation

We measure the house, inspect the ductwork, test static pressure and calculate the actual cooling load.

  2. Itemised written quote

Equipment, labour, sheet metal, electrical, permit and disposal listed separately, usually with two or three efficiency options.

  3. Install day

Old equipment removed, new condenser set and levelled, coil fitted, line set run or replaced, condensate handled, electrical connected.

  4. Commission and register

Charged by weight, superheat and subcooling verified, airflow set, thermostat configured, warranty registered and permit closed.

What a new AC system costs

Central air installation covers a wide range in Central Connecticut, and anyone quoting a figure over the phone is guessing. Equipment tier, line set condition, electrical work and duct corrections all move the number.

Our quote is itemised and flat: equipment, labour, sheet metal, electrical and permit listed separately, and the number on install day is the number you agreed.

The $250 installation special applies, financing runs to sixty months on approved credit, and if you are also facing a heating replacement it is worth pricing a heat pump instead, one system, both seasons, and rebate eligible.

What moves the price

  • Efficiency and stagingSingle-stage to variable-speed is a wide spread in both price and comfort.
  • Ductwork conditionUndersized returns need correcting for the system to deliver its rating.
  • Line setReusing an existing line set is possible in some cases and not in others; we verify rather than assume.
  • Electrical capacitySome panels need work to support a new circuit, which we handle in-house.

AC installation questions

How long does an AC installation take?

Most straightforward replacements are a single day. Adding cooling to a house that has never had it, or jobs needing new line sets and duct corrections, typically run to two.

What size air conditioner do I need?

The size the load calculation says, which is frequently smaller than what is there now. Oversized systems cool quickly, shut off, and leave the house humid, the most common complaint we get about other people’s installations.

Is a higher SEER2 rating worth it?

It depends on how much you run it. Connecticut has a shorter cooling season than the south, so the payback is longer, but variable-speed equipment also dehumidifies much better, and that is usually the reason to choose it.

Can I reuse my existing line set?

Sometimes. It depends on the size, the condition and whether the previous system used a different refrigerant. We inspect and tell you honestly rather than reusing it to save time.

Do I need a permit for a new AC system?

Yes, and we pull it, schedule the inspection and meet the inspector. Be wary of any contractor who offers to skip that step.

Should I install a heat pump instead?

If your heating equipment is also ageing, almost certainly worth pricing, one system does both seasons, and Connecticut rebates apply to qualifying models. We will quote both so you can compare.
