The cheapest room transformation there is

Lighting changes how a room feels more than almost anything else you can do for the money. A kitchen with a single ceiling fixture and a kitchen with layered recessed lighting, under-cabinet task lighting and a dimmer on each are the same room and a completely different place to stand.

The LED transition also broke a lot of things quietly. Old dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs flicker, buzz and cut out with LED loads, and half the complaints we hear about LED lighting are actually complaints about a dimmer that was never designed for it.

Colour temperature is the other half. Warm light in living spaces, neutral in kitchens and baths, cool only where you genuinely need task clarity. Mixing them across an open plan is the single most common thing that makes new lighting feel wrong.

We install fixtures, run new circuits where needed, retrofit recessed cans, sort out three-way and multi-location dimming, and handle exterior and landscape lighting, all on properly rated circuits, with permits where the work requires them.

At a glance

  • Licensed electriciansNot a handyman with a ladder, proper circuits and boxes.
  • Dimmers matched to LEDsThe fix for most flicker and buzz complaints.
  • Colour temperature plannedConsistent across the space, not a mix of whites.
  • Minimal damageRetrofit techniques that avoid tearing up finished ceilings where we can.

What we get asked for most

The projects that come up again and again in Central Connecticut houses.

  • Recessed lighting

The most requested upgrade. Retrofit housings mean we can usually do it without opening the ceiling.

  • Under-cabinet lighting

Transforms a kitchen for a modest cost, and eliminates working in your own shadow.

  • Dimmers that flicker

Almost always an LED-incompatible dimmer. A straightforward swap for the correct type.

  • Fixture replacement

Including heavy chandeliers and fans, which need boxes rated for the weight and movement.

  • Exterior and landscape

Path lighting, soffit lighting, motion-activated security lighting on weather-rated circuits.

  • Old or missing boxes

Older houses often have fixtures hung from boxes that were never rated for them. We correct that as part of the job.

How lighting work runs

Plan the layout first, moving a can afterwards is a drywall job.

Book lighting work
  1. Walk the space

What the room is used for, where the natural light falls, and where the furniture actually sits. Layout follows use, not a grid.

  2. Specify fixtures and controls

Colour temperature, output, beam spread and dimming compatibility chosen deliberately rather than picked off a shelf.

  3. Written quote

Fixtures, circuits, controls and any patching, itemised, including whether a new circuit and permit are required.

  4. Install and adjust

Boxes and circuits installed to code, fixtures aimed and levelled, dimmers configured, and every switch tested before we leave.

What lighting work costs

Lighting is quoted by scope rather than by the hour. Swapping a fixture on an existing box is quick and inexpensive. A room of new recessed lighting on a new circuit with dimming is a project, and we itemise it.

Retrofit recessed housings keep costs down considerably in finished rooms, because they install through a hole cut for the trim rather than requiring the ceiling to be opened. Where a new circuit is needed, that and the permit are listed separately.

Fixtures can be supplied by you or by us. We are happy either way, and we will tell you honestly if something you have chosen will not dim well or will look wrong in the space.

What moves the price

  • New circuit or existingAdding a dedicated circuit is the main cost step-up in most lighting jobs.
  • Ceiling accessA basement or attic above the room makes the run straightforward. A finished ceiling between floors does not.
  • Number of fixturesCost scales with can count, though the setup labour is shared.
  • Fixture choiceSupplied by you or by us; quality and dimming behaviour vary enormously at similar prices.

Lighting questions

Can you install recessed lighting without wrecking my ceiling?

In most cases yes. Retrofit housings go in through the hole cut for the trim, and if there is attic or basement access above the room the wiring runs stay hidden. We will tell you honestly if a particular layout needs patching.

Why do my LED lights flicker when dimmed?

Almost always an incompatible dimmer. Older dimmers were designed for incandescent loads and do not behave with LEDs. Swapping to an LED-rated dimmer fixes the overwhelming majority of these complaints.

What colour temperature should I choose?

Warm, around 2700K, for living rooms and bedrooms, neutral around 3000K to 3500K for kitchens and bathrooms, cooler only for garages and workshops. The important part is consistency across a sight line.

Can you hang a heavy chandelier or ceiling fan?

Yes, on a box rated for the weight and, for fans, for the movement. Many older ceiling boxes are not, and replacing them is part of doing the job properly.

Do I need a permit for lighting work?

Replacing a fixture on an existing circuit, generally not. Adding new circuits or significantly altering the wiring, yes, and we handle it.

Can you install smart lighting?

Yes. Smart switches, dimmers and sensors, wired and configured. We will also tell you where a smart bulb is the simpler answer than rewiring.
